Sussex Printing Corp. under new ownership

SEAFORD — The Sussex Printing Society., longtime publisher of regional classified and advertising publication The Guide, has been sold to a multi-state media company focused on acquiring recognized local brands.

O’Rourke Media Group acquired the company, including its Seaford plant, The Guide and associated website on March 31. The sale of the property was recorded at $1 million, according to Sussex County deeds. O’Rourke Media Group took over the business on April 1 and retained the existing 50 employees.

The Guide has a strong brand and aligns perfectly on our growth strategy as it relates to print advertising, print and design, and digital.We are tasked to work with the team on expanding our digital business and agency in the state of Delaware, and we appreciate the market’s proximity to Philadelphia, southern New Jersey and Maryland.

O’Rourke Media Group currently operates in six states with a full-service digital agency and 23 hyperlocal publications and websites. Since its launch in 2018, the company has assets including numerous community newspapers in Arizona, Wisconsin, New Mexico, Minnesota and Vermont.

Described on its website, the O’Rourke Media Group’s business strategy is to transition local newspapers and community publications to an online platform. Its main source of income is the sale of print and digital advertising and marketing solutions to local businesses. Targeted acquisitions include businesses with established brands, positive cash flow and a healthy advertiser base.

Founded in 1959, Sussex Printing Corp. is a full-service, family-owned print shop, handling products ranging from business cards, brochures, contracts, menus, books and more. He also serves as a weekly announcer on the Delmarva Peninsula through his two publications: The Guide and The Maryland Guide. Both publications ship to 1,500 locations in Delaware and Maryland.

Amy Higgins, who owned Sussex Printing Corp. along with Timothy E. Ayers, was the third generation owner of the business until the sale. In an interview in 2016 with the Delaware Business Times, Higgins acknowledged that many Sussex Printing Corp. “have held front-page positions every week for nearly 30 years,” indicating the Guide’s strength in the South Delaware market.
