New LiftMaster Smart Garage Door Opener Adds Brighter Camera and LEDs
We saw a handful ofgo through the , and the MyQ models are among our top recommendations. Both LiftMaster and Chamberlain use the MyQ platform, and LiftMaster’s newest door opener takes advantage with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a built-in camera.
The Secure View 87504 (yes, openers have familiarly painful model names) is the latest in LiftMaster’s line of connected garage door openers. Like previous models, you can control it from the MyQ app, connect it to voice assistants, and receive notifications when the door is left open. But there are also new features.
The Secure View 87504 has an all-new lighting design, intended to provide “corner-to-corner” coverage from its 360-degree LED ring of light. You will get 2000 lumens of illumination (approximately the equivalent of one) and the joy of never climbing a ladder to change the bulb. This model plugs into a typical installation, but there is a built-in battery backup in case your home loses power.
The folks at LiftMaster note that this model features improved Wi-Fi connectivity and improved memory. Bluetooth is built in for quick setup – LiftMaster offers four minutes or less. The real eye-catching feature of the Secure View 87504 is the integrated camera.
This isn’t the first integrated camera we’ve seen from LiftMaster. The 85503 modelback at CES 2020 also has a camera option. It makes sense to add a camera to your garage door opener. It’s already prominently in your garage with a 140-degree bird’s-eye view of what’s going on.
In the MyQ app, you will be able to stream the camera in real time and hear and respond with two-way audio. You can choose to view past activity with a seven- or 30-day video storage option, available through a monthly subscription. This is a bit of a letdown given the free storage of some much more affordable indoor / outdoor cameras, such as the . But I guess the benefit here is that the camera is built into your opener.
In addition to camera, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth options, this model also includes remote diagnostic capabilities. This means you can track the system for potential issues like a door out of the track or misaligned photoelectric sensors at the bottom of your door frame.
Like other MyQ models, the Secure View 87504 works with select vehicles (read: My Mitsubishi Connect) for native in-dash garage door control. If your car uses Homelink, this model is compatible with versions 4.0 and above. An adapter may be required for some vehicles, depending on age and model.and work with
