Two caregivers are no longer employed in an elderly community in California after apparently abusing a 90-year-old woman with dementia who moved there to prevent a wildfire near her home. The alleged abuse was captured by a hidden camera placed in the resident’s bedroom by her family, without the knowledge of the community, according to a complaint filed with the state.

The lawsuit, filed Sept. 10 with the California Department of Consumer Affairs by the Sacramento-based Aiding the Elderly Foundation, accuses Brookdale Folsom in Folsom, Calif. Of elder abuse, failure to protect a resident from physical damage, lack of dignity, personal insufficiency and leaving the resident unattended after a fall.

According to the document, the woman’s family transferred her to the assisted living and memory care community on August 21 when her home was threatened by the Caldor fire. Shortly after arriving, the family installed a video camera over concerns about the type of care their relative was receiving. On September 2, the family saw video evidence that the resident was “violently assaulted” by two employees, according to the complaint.

“They slapped her, pulled her hair, tormented her and made fun of her,” the report read. Earlier in the morning, a video also reportedly showed the woman lying on the floor in her bedroom for almost an hour before someone helped her up.

A spokeswoman for Brookdale Senior Living said the company takes any allegations “very seriously” and considers the trust of its residents and families to be “vital.”

“Inappropriate conduct or behavior is not tolerated and is treated appropriately,” said the spokesperson. McKnight Seniors Residence. “The people involved are no longer part of the company and we are cooperating with the authorities. “

The spokeswoman added that Brookdale has “rigorous employment standards” in place, including background checks and continuing education in accordance with state rules and regulations.
