YARDLEY, Pennsylvania., October 6, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Leading metal packaging manufacturer Crown Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: CCK) (Crown) (www.crowncork.com) has announced a collaboration with Velox Ltd. (www.velox-digital.com), an innovative developer and manufacturer of direct digital decorating solutions, to provide beverage brands with revolutionary digital decorating technology for straight wall and neck aluminum cans. Crown and Velox have combined their expertise to open up new possibilities for big brands looking to expand their product offering, as well as small producers enjoying the benefits of fully recyclable beverage cans. The technology and solution offer market firsts and create greater branding design options with run speeds five times faster than existing digital solutions and exclusive features, including the ability to print up to with 14 simultaneous colors and embellishments such as gloss, matte and embossing on almost the entire surface of the box.
Crown and Velox recognize growing global demand from beverage brands for more innovative digital decor solutions. Brands can now take advantage of the multiple benefits of technology and solutions, particularly running lower production volumes that do not meet the constraints of traditional printing, such as small batch varieties, seasonal and promotional products to short term or multipacks containing a variety of SKUs. Velox technology and solutions also offer photorealistic quality and a wider color gamut for graphics, the ability to quickly produce an accurate print proof of a package and, in the case of smaller brands, improved durability by compared to traditional shrink plastic films and labels which significantly hamper the recycling process of aluminum cans.
âBeverage producers continue to select aluminum cans for consumer convenience, long shelf life, infinite recyclability and 360 degree appeal,â said Dan Abramowicz, Executive Vice President, Technology and Regulatory Affairs at Crown. âThe dynamic, high-speed solution we’re launching with Velox makes these benefits more accessible to brands of all sizes and across multiple product categories. From speed to quality to design features, the technology is truly pushing the boundaries of digital printing for beverage cans, and we look forward to showcasing this exciting innovation to our partners around the world. ”
As a speaker at the IMDPA 2021 conference at Oak Brook, Illinois, Mr. Abramowicz presented earlier today the commercialization of digital decoration solutions for two-piece straight-walled and necked beverage cans and introduced the collaboration.
Unique to the technology and solution is an operating speed of up to 500 cans per minute, significantly above previous limits of 90 cans per minute for digitally printed beverage cans of comparable quality. The innovative technology also prints efficiently on the can surface with or without a white basecoat, streamlining production and allowing the use of translucent inks and / or the metallic substrate to shine through graphics whenever desired. In addition, it allows the printing of images – for the first time – both on the neck of the box and on the chime, thus increasing the brand image and the appeal to consumers.
âNever before has the beverage market realized the speeds or design capabilities that our direct digital decorating solution now offers for metal beverage cans,â said Marian Cofler, CEO and co-founder of Velox. âThe extensive collaboration with Crown over the past few years allows us to realize our vision and support can manufacturers, fillers and brands seeking greater differentiation for their customers. Revolutionary technology will advance the industry and redefine what is possible in beverage packaging. design and manufacture. ”
Leveraging the deep multidisciplinary technical capabilities and strong digital printing expertise of the Velox R&D center Israel head office, with Crown’s global mastery in graphic design, metal forming technology, box manufacturing process and a long history in metal packaging innovation, machine development digital printing is already finished. Production of commercial cans using this technology is expected by 2022, following ongoing pilot trials at Crown’s global R&D center in Wantage, UK.
